For such along time now I have been talking about eating as much as possible using this simple mantra “If its off a tree, out of the ground, walks the land swims the ocean” its more often than not going to do great things for you, both on a physical and mental level.

Ive talked about avoiding “HI” (human interfered) with foods, as they have been shown over and over again to have long term harmful effects on your health and wellbeing. In my “Supermarket tours” we always talk about what an important relationship our “gut” has with not only our body composition (fat:muscle ratio), so therefore your body shape, but also the critical relationship our brain has with our gut. This topic of conversation i deem to be of such great importance that I have  just added a whole “Nutrition lecture” on gut health to my brand new Fusion “Transform You” 12 week Group program which starts in late September 2015, as this is such a vital area to your long term success.

So why is all this “gut stuff” so very important?

Lets just say its all about the relationships between the “good and bad bacteria that party on in your gut’!

You see on average each one of us have a colony of trillions of little bacteria, fungi and viruses and these little critters can all add up to weighing a whopping 2kg or more in weight. Its these little microbes that play vital roles in your digestion capabilities, your immune function,  your ability to operate optimally cognitively (yes how you think), your cardio vascular health, and of course you ability to stay fit, healthy, and lean.

So how do you take control and optimise the performance of your unique gut micro biome?

Well you fuel these little critters with the optimal fuels that allow them to party hard, and to perform at their very best. Yes you must feed them the right tucker regularly. These fuels we call pre and probiotics. Have you heard of them before? Maybe this rings a bell” And you get down in the gut”, have you had your inner health plus today?

Yes your optimal health, wellbeing and body shape is related strongly to whats happening with the trillions of microbes partying in your gut. If you continue to self sabotage your own “gut micro biome  party” by supplying “contaminated refined rubbish” like high sugar based products, highly refined low fibre based foods (cereals,cakes, pastries, most breads and alike) truck loads of man vegetable  made oils (safflower, sunflower, soy bean and alike), alcohol in more than moderation (1-2 standard drinks a day), and limiting your range or the “diversity” of foods you eat each and every day (eating the same things day in day out) then you are well and truly inviting weight gain, fat gain, illness, and cognitive decline into your life.

A prebiotic is basically a fuel that your probiotics use to function at their very best. Yes, the probiotics use the probiotics we eat as high performance fuel that allows them to carry out the array of tasks they have. Yes like producing the vital amino acids for immunity, the vitamins we use to obtain energy from foods, and act as co-enzymes to speed up reactions that take place in our bodies each and every second of the day.

So here is a short list of foods that you should really be looking at adding into your daily eating and refuelling regime: (Pre and probiotics – Mother Natures Pharmacy):

  • Quality high grade Natural Greek Yoghurt (rich in probiotics)
  • Sauerkraut
  • Artichokes (preferably Jerusalem but globe is also fine)
  • Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Banana
  • Black Coffee
  • Chicory root (aka as endive)
  • Capsicums
  • Celeriac
  • Dandelion greens
  • High Cocoa Dark chocolate (85% plus)
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Fermented high quality cheeses like (Blue Vein)
  • Green tea
  • Garlic
  • Leeks
  • Onions
  • Wheat bran, wheat flour
  • Some nuts and seeds (flaxseeds and Pistachios)
  • Sourdough Bread (Rye is slightly higher than standard)
  • Red wine
  • A high quality probiotic supplement with multiple strains of bacteria (this won’t work on its own, you need the probiotics to fuels these remember!)

Along with making friends with the above super foods on a very regular basis (in most cases), this is the list of things to reduce heavily, if not try to eliminate: (They only wreak havoc on the good gut bacteria and feed the bad guys) :-(

  • Added sugar to any foods or drinks
  • Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink period
  • Negative talk which them leads to emotional rebound eating
  • Foods designed to hit the “bliss point” that being (high sugar, high fat, with salt), so things like cakes, ice creams, pastries, most takeaway foods!

So there you have it – how to fuel your trillions of little friends that dine with you each and every day! Its really up-to you now to eat to flourish or eat to destroy, again, the “choices are always yours!”.
